An Important Cause
The fourth annual Canary Derby once again brings together the Vancouver Island technology and business community, Canary Foundation of Canada and BC Cancer Foundation to help support early detection research. This year there will be a rivalry not only between the competitors of the Victoria Canary Derby, but also between the competitors of the Vancouver Canary Derby on the same weekend. So this year it is even more important that you show your support for the Vancouver Island teams. Let's show Vancouver how it should be done.
Fundraising Goal
The Canary Derby raises money for the Canary Foundation of Canada, an organization dedicated to funding early cancer detection. Don Listwin, Silicon Valley veteran and founder of Canary was on-hand at the 3rd Annual Victoria Canary Derby to personally congratulate the community for raising over $140,000 in 2008. Our goal is to raise more than $500,000 on Vancouver Island over the next three years to support the early detection work at the BC Cancer Agency right here in Victoria.
Two Foundations - One Fight Against Cancer
The BC Cancer Foundation received a $1-million donation and a challenge in 2006 from California- based Don Listwin, a 25-year-veteran in the high-tech industry, for an ambitious research project that he believes will produce a simple, life-saving blood test by 2015. Mr. Listwin made the donation through Canary Foundation, which he founded after his mother's death from ovarian cancer. The mission of Canary Foundation is to advance early detection of cancer, when it is most treatable and chances for a full recovery are greatest. Read the Foundation's history.
What is happening in early detection cancer research?
For many types of cancer, it is easier to treat and cure the cancer if it is found early. There are many different types of cancer, but most cancers begin with abnormal cells growing out of control, forming a lump or tumour. The tumour can continue to grow until the cancer begins to spread to other parts of the body. If the tumour can be found while it is still small and localized, it can often be cured by surgery and other standard treatments.
BC cancer researchers are collaborating with Canary's group of leading scientists from the United States to develop a rapid and accurate immunoassay that will detect cancers at an early stage, when they are still highly curable. Your support of the BC Cancer Foundation is making a difference!

The Canary Cancer Bash
A special thanks to the The Strathcona, Sticky Wicket and Rooftop Surfclub for hosting the 2nd Annual Canary Cancer Bash on June 11, 2009. The event was a huge success and all proceeds are going to benefit the Canary Foundation of Canada through the Victoria Derby.
The 2008 Canary Derby
Thank you to all who joined us by participating, watching, volunteering and most of all donating to make the 2008 Canary Derby a huge success!
Quick Facts about the 2008 Derby:
- The Technology Community raised $140,000 dollars in 2008.
- Funds raised were used to purchase equipment for Dr. Brad Nelson's Canary Project lab at BC Cancer Agency's Trev & Joyce Deeley Research Centre in Victoria, BC. This equipment further improves the efficiency of assay development. Dr. Nelson's Canary Project team has recently added two new employees and now comprises six full-time staff dedicated to developing blood tests to measure novel candidate biomarkers for ovarian, prostate, pancreatic, and lung cancers.
- 14 teams participated with GenoLogics winning the fundraising category at $20,044 and Schneider Electric winning the speed category with a time of 68.16 seconds and a speed of 51 km/h.
- Caorda Solutions took home the "Bent Wheel Trophy" for team spirit and sportsmanship.
